State of the art diesel electric hybrid Irwin 38 Center Cockpit Cruiser!
Ted Irwin yachts are celebrated for his practical, cruiser-oriented designs that prioritized comfort, seaworthiness, and affordability. This 38 foot center cockpit was one of his most popular designs, featuring two cabins and a spacious salon. Praised for its tank-like build and comfort ratio, with a solid fiberglass hull and full keel, this hybrid diesel electric setup makes an amazing combination. The prop is powered by twin 15KW water cooled electric motors, for 30KW of total power. This twin motor setup adds fault tolerance, there are no single points of failure from the motor to the independent battery bank. You can chose to use the battery bank to get in and out of the anchorage or marina, and just sail the boat, or run it like a traditional diesel and cruise at 6 knots until the generator runs out of fuel. The redundancy doesn’t stop there when you’re off the dock, you can charge the batteries with the wind generator, 2KW of solar panels, the prop when it spins under sail, or the 12KW genset.
The galley is propane free, with an electric stove and pellet smoker on the stern rail. This yacht is setup to cruise Mexico or beyond, just load up the huge fridge and freezer and cast off those dock lines!
